HESSLE'S Paul Lockwood stormed to victory in the East Riding Alliance Championship at Ganton.
He was four shots behind the leading score after the morning round, but a dazzling 67 afternoon effort sealed the title.

Lockwood beat event favourite and his coach, home club pro Gary Brown, who was looking to repeat his win when it was last played at the club 20 years ago.
All appeared to be going according to plan for Brown when he posted a three-under-par morning round of 69.
Leading the chasing pack at lunch was Malton & Norton's Chris Halley (+1) on 71, with past winner Nick Ludwell (Selby) on 72.
An undoubted star of the morning round was Filey's Jamie Gregory (5), a regular in the East Riding Union's under-18s team, who returned an impressive 73, a score equalled by Lockwood (+3).
Other players in with a chance of having a say after the morning round were Hornsea professional David Close on 74, David Jackson (Beverley) on 75 and defending champion Mat Daley (Hainsworth Park), Michael Helyard (Beverley), Steve Robins (Hull) and professional Michael Brooks (Malton and Norton) all on 76.
With the intermittent rain continuing into the afternoon, few players were able to improve on their morning scores.
Brown and Ludwell were first out after lunch and they were soon trading shots, with the Selby professional striving to make up the three-shot morning shortfall.
In the end, after 36 holes, just two shots separated the pair with Brown adding a 73 to his 69 for 142 and Ludwell posting 71 for 143.
With more than half the 72-strong field back in the clubhouse it looked as if Brown would win, until Lockwood returned a five-under-par 67 for 140 and a two-shot winning lead.
Having had "a cold putter in the morning" things very much turned around for Lockwood in the afternoon with three birdies apiece on the front and back nines.
He even had the luxury of a three putt on the 18th, his only dropped shot of the second round.
Whilst Halley fell away with a 75, Helyard, with a 72, and Daley, with a 74, both improved on their first round efforts, but could not challenge Lockwood, whose stunning afternoon round was indeed champion golf.
Lockwood said: "I struck the ball pretty well all day.
"The six shot difference between the two rounds was that my putter warmed up in the afternoon.
"It is a very pleasing win, especially finishing in front of two experienced pros like Gary and Nick. A lot of the progress I've made in golf is down to Gary's coaching."
36 hole Gross Scores: P. Lockwood (Hessle) 140 (73/69), G. Brown (Ganton) 142 (69/73), N. Ludwell (Selby) 143 (72/71), C. Halley (Malton & Norton) 146 (71/75), M. Helyard (Beverley) 148 (76/72), D. Close (Hornsea) 149 (74/75), M. Daley (Hainsworth Park) 150 )76/74), S. Robins (Hull) 153 (76/77), J.R.L. Brown (Malton & Norton) 154 (79/75), R. Wardle (Selby) 154 (77/77).
36 hole Nett Scores: 147 R.M. Brown (Hornsea) (75/72), J. Gregory (Filey) (68/79).
Assistant's Champion: D. Woodhead (Hessle) 155 (80/75).

HESSLE'S Nick Fairbank (4) and Scott Laughton (14) proved too strong for Ganstead's Phil Beadle (7) and Sam Walmsley (15) in the Hull & District Golfing Association's Wiles Cup Final.
The Hessle pairing won by 3 and 2 at the 64th staging of the event held at Hull Golf Club.
-

In a closely-contested final, Fairbank and Laughton got off to a flyer.
Fairbank took the opening hole with a par five only for them to be immediately pegged back with the Ganstead pair winning the second hole.
Steady golf on the front nine saw the Hessle pair progress to two-up after eight, only for them to lose the ninth and turn only one to the good.
Two rapid-fire wins on holes 11 and 12 saw the Hessle duo move to three-up.
Although Beadle and Walmsley clawed a hole back at the 14th the end came at the 16th where neither Ganstead player could find the green with their tee shots.
With Laughton making a regulation par-three the match was over and the combatants were shaking hands.
After receiving the Wiles Cup from the match referee and Hull & District President Tim Hubbard (Withernsea), a delighted Fairbank said: "We knew it would be a tough final and so it proved.
"The front nine was tight and I suppose the turning point was our back-to-back wins on holes 10 and 11 that put us three-up.
"Thereafter it was a question of keeping it tight and that is what we did.
"Having to qualify through your own club competition and then battle through knockout rounds makes this an extremely tough competition to win so, as you can imagine, Scott and I are well pleased both for ourselves and Hessle."
Congratulations from all at Hessle Golf Club

SCARBOROUGH North Cliff snatched the Hull Daily Mail Championship Bowl, pipping Heworth on a dramatic last day at York.
At the start of the 10th match of the series, Heworth held a two-point lead at the top over Scarborough, with Ganton, Driffield and holders Hessle in with a shout, being only five, six and eight points adrift.
Early starters Heworth, looking to end their centenary celebrations in style, set the pace.
Their two better-ball counting pairs posted a combined nine under total of 131 for an overall total of 1,355.
All they could do was sit and wait for the other teams in contention to try and shoot them down with an anxious Heworth team captain Jim Batt (3) feeling his three putt on the last could prove costly.
Team scores of 127 from Driffield and 129 from Ganton saw both clubs come up short of the Heworth target on 1,357 and 1,358.
Holders Hessle, although eight off the pace at the start of the day, made a tremendous charge in an effort to retain the bowl with club captain David Liversedge and Bryan Calam shooting the low round of the day, a 61, that contributed to a team score of 125, 15-under-par, to finish just two shots short of Heworth's total.
Only Scarborough North Cliff could now deny Heworth and with the seasiders' last pair of Steve Pybus (1) and Paul Kitson (10) coming up the par four 18th a birdie would give them the title.
Pybus, who was just off the green in two, was up to the task as he rolled in a 30ft putt, much to the elation of his team members and club officials gathered around the green.
North Cliff were the champions by one shot (1,354), taking the bowl they had last won in 1991.
The 18th hole had been the deciding factor between the two front runners.
It had cost Heworth 10 shots as against North Cliff's five with the seasider's former assistant professional Simon Boddy (3) adding an eagle two to the birdie by Pybus when, after hitting a huge drive down the 383-yard hole, Boddy's 54 degree lob wedge second shot pitched ten foot past the hole and then spun back into the cup.
It was a fitting climax to what has been the closest contested season in many years.
The best better-ball score of the day was returned by Hessle's Liversedge (6) and Calam (9), who even had the luxury of a three-putt bogey on the 18th in their nine-under-par 61 to take the tankards and edge out Driffield's Geoff Drewery (6) and Brian Muir (10) by one shot.
North Cliff's proud club captain Alan Richardson said: "This is just tremendous for the club.
"It has been 21 years since we last won the bowl and huge credit must go to our small squad of players who have consistently produced the scores and kept us up at the top in contention."
The next East Riding Alliance is at Bridlington (Belvedere) on March 28 when the current Alliance president Anthony Howarth will host his President's Salver.
Leading Better-ball scores: 61 D. Liversedge (6) & B. Calam (9) Hessle; 62 G. Drewery (6) & B. Muir (10) Driffield: 63 S. Pybus (1) & P. Kitson (10) Scarborough North Cliff; 64 P. Rutterford (9) & S. FATHER and son Mike and Ben Atkinson put on a late spurt to take the spoils at the Hull & District Golfing Association's meeting at Hornsea.
Recent recruits to Hessle Golf Club, both having previously been members at Hull, the Atkinsons appeared to be off the pace at only two under par for the first two thirds of the round.
But an upward gear shift saw them play the last six holes in five under par to return a score of 65 with ten handicap Mike, a past president of the association, effectively using his shot allowance by recording a couple of nett birdies, and son Ben (4) finishing in a blaze of glory with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.
The Atkinsons' 65 was equalled by the home club's low handicap pairing of professional David Close (Scr) and amateur partner Adrian Rosindale (3), but when it came to the back six count-back they were unable to compete with the Hessle pair's five under birdie blitz and had to settle for the runner-up slot.
Third place went to another father and son partnership, the home club duo of Paul (8) and son James (5) Robinson who were two shots back on 67 alongside three other pairs, prevailing on a back six count-back.
Ben Atkinson said: "Although we played steadily over the first two thirds of the round we were not front runners until our birdie run over the last six holes.
"That certainly smartened up our card and put us in pole position."
If there was a downside to the Atkinsons' win it was that as Mike is a former president of the association and the pair were playing in a past president's start time, this was not a counting pair for Hessle in the Victor Hurdle.
As a result, the home club were able to extend their lead in the table from seven to ten shots over joint second-placed clubs, Hessle and Hull, and despite the unpredictability of the game it does look as though, with only one round remaining at Hull, Hornsea are home and dry.
Leading better-ball scores: 65 M.Atkinson (10) & B.Atkinson (5) Hessle, D.Close (Scr) & A.Rosindale (3) Hornsea; 66 J.Robinson (4) & P.Robinson (8) Hornsea, D.Moore (5) & T.Wilkinson (5) Ganstead Park, R.Norton (Scr) & N.Bloomfield (5) Beverley & E.R., J.Illingworth (10) & C.Jarvis (13) Cave Castle.
Victor Hurdle placings: 1st Hornsea 579, 2nd = Hessle & Hull 589, 4th = Cave Castle & Ganstead Park 592, 6th Beverley & E.R. 600, 7th = Hainsworth Park & Springhead Park 603, 9th Sutton Park 606, 10th Withernsea 608.

HESSLE have chalked up a notable double with Ruth Goodwin becoming captain of the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association and John Deeming being nominated as the president for Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs.
The event is possibly not without precedent, but is nevertheless unusual given that there are over 190 golf clubs in Yorkshire.
Goodwin was installed as the 2012 county captain at the Association's AGM in Harrogate, having served as the vice captain for the past 12 months.
She has been a member of the county executive since 2004 and since 2007 has been the county handicap adviser.
A 12-handicap golfer with aspirations to get down to single figures, she was Hessle Golf Club's lady captain in 2003.
"Yorkshire has so many golf club and so to be captain of the Yorkshire Ladies is a tremendous honour both for me personally and for Hessle Golf Club," said Goodwin.
"I am really looking forward to my year and to the challenges that lie ahead and I know having been involved in the Association that when I need support it will be forthcoming.
"One of my main goals is for Yorkshire to regain the Northern Counties title that we last held in 2010."
Deeming's nomination will give Hessle Golf Club only its second president of Yorkshire in the club's history following on from Vic Coupland in 1970.
It is also another major coup for the East Riding Union of Golf Clubs as he will follow Hull Golf Club's Stephen Larard, who will be the 2012 Yorkshire president.
Deeming is a long-standing member of Hessle having joined in 1978.
He currently plays off a handicap of 12 and has held many offices at the club, including captain in 1985, chairman from 1986 to 1995 and president in 2003-04.
He was president of the East Riding Union in 2001 and has been a Yorkshire executive member since 2002.
He is also an EGU referee and sits on the EGU Tournament Panel.
He is fully absorbed in all aspects of golf having retired from professional life in 1999 when he was Kingston upon Hull City Council's Director of Technical Services having trained as a chartered engineer.
"I am honoured to be invited to take on the role of next year's president (elect) of the Yorkshire Union and in this respect I am grateful to the past presidents for their support in nominating me," he said.
"This is also a tremendous honour for Hessle who I believe have only once in the past provided a president. I look forward to supporting next year's president, Hull Golf Club's Stephen Larard."

Paul Lockwood (Hessle, Yorkshire) and Matthew Wallace (Moor Park, Hertfordshire) will attempt to extend England’s fine record in the event when they represent the EGU in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup at Los Lagartos Country Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 10th – 13th November.
The annual 72-hole stroke play championship in which the aggregate scores of both players count, has seen a number of English players taking the honours.
Nick Dougherty and Gary Wolstenholme won in 2000 and were succeeded in 2001 by Zane Scotland and David Skinns. Gary Lockerbie and Michael Skelton succeeded in 2003, Seve Benson and Ed Richardson in 2006, while Sam Hutsby and Chris Wood were runners-up in the following year.
There is also an individual award and Andrew Sullivan captured that last year after a playoff.
Lockwood, 19, a former boy cap, made his full international debut against Spain at The Berkshire last May. Runner-up in the Carris Trophy in 2010, he finished second in the Titleist/FootJoy EGU Boys Order of Merit last year and has enjoyed a successful 2011. Beside his full England cap, he finished joint third in the North of England Youths Championship, tied fourth in the Lee Westwood Trophy, fifth in the Riverswood Junior Open in Holland, sixth in the West of England Stroke Play Championship and equal eighth in the Lytham Trophy.
Like Lockwood, Wallace, 21, is a member of the England training squad for this winter and 2012, having emerged over the last two years. After topping the South East Qualifier and finishing third in the Tillman Trophy in 2010, this year has seen him finish runner-up in the Berkshire Trophy and the Czech Amateur. He also reached the second round of the British Amateur Championship at Hillside and finished tied tenth in the South of England Amateur at Walton Heath.
After the Tailhade Cup the pair will stay in Buenos Aires for the Argentine Amateur Championship at San Isidro Golf Club on 15th – 20th November.
The Argentine Amateur has a 36-hole stroke play qualifying competition with the leading 64 players going forward to the match play knockout. Each round is over 18 holes with the final over 36. Luke Goddard won the title in 2008
